Basic Rules for Better Web Design

Publisher: Dmytro Nesterov (Marketing Department Officer)

Design of your website is something that visitors see and judge from the very second they land on any page of your site. Of course, if you have an interesting, unusual and useful content that grabs visitors’ attention from the first sight, then you can have success even with the simplest web design. You must have heard many times that content is king. But what if you are trying to sell something on your website in extremely thought competition environment? Your content can be also good but your competitors are not frittering away their time and opportunities to have high quality content on their websites too. And this is where a good web design can play a big role in keeping prospect customers on YOUR website? When it comes to working in tough competition very little advantage over your competitor can be decisive for gaining profit through online customers.

In this article I would like to outline a few rules which are to be followed to have web design look professional and customer-appealing.

Rules to Consider for Professional Web Design

  • Make sure you optimized your website graphics as much as possible to enable quick loading of site pages. You shouldn’t however sacrifice on the quality of images too much. It is important to reduce size of graphics to such a point that images would preserve their decent quality and have no easily visible drawbacks. If you want to show big size images on the site, include them to the page as small preview images (thumbnails) with possibility to click on them in order to see the original full-size image. Quick loading website will prevent your visitors to quit the page on your website which takes much time to load (when it comes to web page loading, each loading second actually annoys visitors. Who’s going to wait some 30 seconds for your web page to load?). Another important pro about quick loading pages is that Google has recently announced that site load speed would be soon included into the list of the factors Google takes into consideration when determining a rank of websites on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
  • Add some interesting eye catching elements on your website, like interesting collages, product pictures or creative graphic elements, but do not use too many graphics to avoid large page size, visitors’ attention distraction and tasteless encumbering disposition of graphics. Design of your website must be clear and uncluttered to make your visitors feel at ease and relaxed.
  • Try to use your brand colors, the same page design and typeface all over the whole website. This will make your website consistent and professionally looking. If you have a logo, include it to every page in the same place.
  • Make sure the website has a simple and user friendly navigation. Your site visitors must always be able to easily find how to navigate between the pages. They must know on what page they currently are (put a well visible, unique title on each page) and how to switch to other desired page (provide on easy to reach menu on each page of the website). If your website consists of a lot of pages, it would be reasonable to have a link to the site map on each page of the website. Put a home button on each page. Make the header or the company logo as a link to home page, except on the home page itself.
  • Avoid using of pup-ups, loud music looping on background without possibility to control volume or turn it off, flash intros that take ages to load especially on the home page.

I hope the above little tips will be a kind of a Web Designer’s Safety Guide for you to avoid bad amateurish web design practices.
